Roof tents bus

Roof tent Bus, surf bus or van?
A rooftop tent bus provides more freedom, flexibility and adventure during your road trips? A (homemade) bus camper, surf bus or (converted) van is the way to get the most out of your trip. However, you soon find out that space is limited after all.

The solution: a rooftop tent on the bus provides extra space to sit and sleep. More and more travelers are opting for this clever camping solution. But what should you pay attention to when buying or mounting one? Also check out our roof tent with trailer.

Benefits of a rooftop tent on your bus
(1) Additional berths
Without the major modifications required to install a lift roof, you can easily place a roof tent on your camper van. This allows you to easily and quickly create additional sleeping spaces on the roof of your vehicle.

(2) Space-saving in your bus

Because you sleep on the roof, you keep more space inside your van or bus camper for belongings, utensils or just to sit.

(3) Sleeping at altitude

You literally sleep above the ground. That means: no problems with wet bottoms, insects or uneven ground. This is also true with a rooftop tent camper.

(4) Freedom and flexibility

You can camp wherever and whenever you want. After all, you sleep in/on your vehicle, for which the rules are much more relaxed than camping with a separate (side) tent for the kids.

(5) Adventurous appearance

A rooftop tent gives your van a rugged, outdoor look. Ideal for surfers, hikers and campers who like to travel off the beaten path.

What should you look for when choosing a rooftop tent for your bus?

(1) The type of rooftop tent you choose

Due to the height, not all types are rooftop tents equally practical to place on a camper van. The cover for a softcover roof tent can be quite a challenge to put back on every time you want to move. The ideal choice for a bus is a hardcover roof tent.

(2) Roof load of your vehicle

To be sure, always check what the maximum roof load is on your van or bus camper. Most vans have a maximum allowable dynamic roof load (= allowable roof load while driving) of 100kg.

Most hardcover rooftop tents weigh between 75 and 85 kg, without people. The static roof load (=allowed roof load during standstill) is 3 to 5 times the dynamic roof load

(3) Type of roof racks

Make sure you have strong, reliable roof racks suitable for the weight of the tent as well as the people in it. Not all racks are certified for this.

(4) Fine ladder

A good, sturdy ladder is essential. Our rooftop tents come with a 230cm telescopic ladder . Check if this is sufficient for your van. If you have an H2 or H3 van, consider whether a fixed-mounted roof access is more practical.

(5) Overall height

Keep in mind the height of your vehicle. Especially with large rooftop tents. Measure the overall height of your vehicle once you have the rooftop tent mounted and put a sticker on your dashboard as a reminder.

Whether you’re an avid surfer who takes his board everywhere, or a nature lover who enjoys free camping, a rooftop tent on your bus or van camper gives you the ultimate freedom. Choose smart, install safely and enjoy endless road trips with fantastic views.
