Which roof racks will fit my car?

Choosing roof racks doesn’t have to be complicated. Determine your roof type, know your car’s roof load, and then choose the right bars and feet. Will you use the carriers for a rooftop tent? Check out our rooftop tents.

1. Determine your roof type

  • Open roof rails: loose rail with space underneath; carriers clamp around it.
  • Closed (flush) rails: rail lies tight on roof; feet click/screw into slot (car-specific kit required).
  • Fixpoints: cover caps or screw points in the roof; feet screw on with a model-specific kit.
  • Smooth roof (without rails): feet clamp into doorway with appropriate sealant.
  • T-profile/rain gutter: often on vans/oldtimers; requires special feet. Do you drive a bus or RV? Then check our roof tents for camper vans.

2. Check the carrying capacity

You calculate with two values:

  • Dynamic roof load (car): what your roof is allowed to carry while driving (often 50-100 kg). Read more about the roof load car.
  • Carrier load capacity: what the set itself can handle.

Rule of calculation: weight of carriers + accessories + load ≤ dynamic roof load of your car.

Are you using a rooftop tent? Count the ladder, too. If you drive a lot and want to set up and take down quickly, consider a hardcover rooftop tent.

3. Choose rods and feet

  • Steel vs. aluminum: steel is often cheaper and strong; aluminum is lighter and stainless.
  • Aero profile: wing-shaped rods are quieter and more economical than straight tubes (noticeable on long trips or a mounted rooftop tent).
  • T-slot/slot: useful for mounting extras (bike/kayak/canopy).
  • Car-specific kit: feet and kit must fit make, model, year and roof type. “Universal” rarely fits really well.

Safe and smart use

  • Lock your carriers with a lock.
  • Distribute the load evenly and tie everything down.
  • Pay attention to height (garages, branches, bridges).
  • Check bolts/clamps after the first ride and periodically thereafter.
  • Disassemble carriers if you don’t use them for a long time: saves noise and consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mount any brand of carriers?
Usually yes, provided you choose the right feet and kit (always car-specific).

How do I find my roof load?
In the instruction booklet or at the dealer. Also read our blog on roof load car for more information.

Do roof racks make a lot of noise?
Straight tubes do. Aero rods are noticeably quieter and often more economical, especially with a rooftop tent mounted.

Can I drive with a rooftop tent on the carriers?
Yes, as long as tent + carriers stay within the dynamic roof load. Sleeping is static and may be higher.

What if my car has too little roof load?
Choose a lighter tent or go for a roof tent on trailer.
