Pros and cons of a rooftop tent: is it for you?

Unsure if a rooftop tent is right for you? You’re not the only one. More and more people are discovering the convenience of a rooftop tent: quick to set up, comfortable to sleep in and ready for any adventure. Yet a rooftop tent also has drawbacks you should consider. In this article you will read about the main advantages and disadvantages of a rooftop tent so you can decide if this type of camping suits you.

The advantages of a rooftop tent

1. Quickly set up

One of the biggest advantages of a rooftop tent is its ease of use. Within five minutes you have a complete sleeping place, without loose poles or pegs. Ideal if you arrive late or change spots often during a road trip.

2. Always sleep dry and level

No more mud, rocks or crooked terrain. You sleep elevated, dry and comfortable no matter where you stand. Especially in the rain or on uneven ground, you notice how much difference that makes.

3. Feeling safe

You sleep higher off the ground, so you are less bothered by insects or curious animals. This feels safer and more peaceful, especially in unfamiliar places.

4. Saving space in the car

Because the tent is on the roof, the trunk remains free for luggage, food and camping gear. Everything has its place, and you can leave faster.

5. Freedom and adventure

A rooftop tent allows you to camp in places where regular tents or RVs don’t go. You are mobile, independent and decide where to spend the night. That’s the real charm of a rooftop tent.

6. Suitable for every season

Good rooftop tents are resistant to rain, wind and cold. Thanks to vents and sturdy canvas, you can sleep comfortably in them even in summer.

The disadvantages of a rooftop tent

1. Weight and roof load

Buying a rooftop tent also means checking what your car can handle. Not every tent can fit on every car. So always check the maximum roof load before choosing a tent.

2. Storage

In the months you don’t use your rooftop tent, extend its life by removing it from your car. For this you will need quite a bit of muscle power. If you have a garage or carport, a roof tent elevator or ceiling winch may be the way to go. Do you leave the tent on your car all year? Then always remove the mattress and air the tent regularly.

3. Slightly higher fuel consumption

A rooftop tent catches more wind, which costs a little extra fuel. On average, 1 to 2 liters per 100 km. Especially with softcover roof tents you notice this difference a little more than with hardcover roof tents.

4. Condensation

Roof tents are designed to allow you to continue traveling as soon as you wake up, regardless of the weather. A special coating is applied to the polycotton for this purpose. The disadvantage of this coating is that the moisture you produce while sleeping cannot escape as easily. With greater temperature differences and high humidity, this results in condensation forming on the inside. Make the most of the ventilation options and choose a tent with a condensation regulating under-mattress to prevent condensation build-up as much as possible.

5. Not suitable for everyone

For people staying in one place for 3 weeks, a trailer tent or caravan may be a more practical alternative. A rooftop tent is especially ideal for adventurous travelers who move often and want to see a lot of a country. Once you unfold the tent, you can’t take a quick car ride to the beach or supermarket. Still want to stay flexible when you’re in one place for a bit longer? Then a roof tent on trailer is a smart alternative.

Who is a rooftop tent suitable for?

A rooftop tent fits well with people who love adventure, freedom and sleeping outdoors. It is ideal for:

  • Roadtrippers and nature lovers
  • Families who like to explore
  • Campers who like to be on the move quickly

Less suitable for:

  • Those with mobility problems or who find climbing stairs difficult
  • Those who camp in one place for a long time
  • Those looking for a lot of luxury or space (like in a caravan)
