Wild camping with a rooftop tent: freedom, comfort and adventure

Want a real adventure? Wild camping with a rooftop tent is the way to discover nature without being tied down to campsites or reservations. No planning, no queues for sanitary facilities, just you, your vehicle and a roof tent from FjällVila. In this blog you will read why a rooftop tent is ideal for wild camping, where you can pitch it and how to enjoy your freedom responsibly.

Why wild camping with a rooftop tent?

A rooftop tent is made for travelers who love freedom as well as comfort. Unlike a ground tent, you don’t need flat ground, no pegs or air mattresses, and you’re ready to sleep in minutes.

Advantages of wild camping with a rooftop tent:

  • You sleep high, away from moisture, mud and curious animals.
  • You set up the tent in 3 to 5 minutes, with no fuss.
  • You are protected from rain, wind and UV rays.
  • You leave no trace: minimal impact on nature.
  • Ideal for short stops or longer trips with many moves.

Wild camping with a rooftop tent gives you the freedom to choose where to wake up each day, from a fjord in Norway to a forest in Estonia.

Where can you wild camp with a rooftop tent?

Wild camping is not allowed everywhere. These are the rules by region (status: 2025):

✅ Permitted or actively tolerated

  • Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, Finland) – Max. 2 nights, minimum 150 meters from buildings.
  • Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) – Allowed, with permission on private property.
  • Scotland – Free allowed except in some nature parks.
  • Poland – Not allowed, but 450 designated forest areas are available.
Romania & Albania – Allowed outside protected areas.
  • Balkans & Eastern Europe – Actively tolerated or not enforced in many countries.

⚠️ Partially allowed / varying policy

  • France, Spain, Portugal, Italy – Officially forbidden, but often tolerated when staying overnight in remote locations.
  • Switzerland & Austria – Differs by canton or region. Check well in advance.

❌ Forbidden or strongly discouraged

  • Netherlands, Belgium, Germany – Wild camping with a rooftop tent is prohibited and strictly controlled.

Tip: Use apps such as Park4Night or iOverlander to find legal or popular spots.

Wild camping? Do it with respect for nature

Finding a unique place is nice, but make sure you don’t do any damage. Adhere to the Leave No Trace principles:

  • Do not leave trash behind, including toilet paper or food scraps.
  • Make fire only where permitted, and use existing fire pits.
  • Stay in existing parking spots or paths.
  • Be quiet and respectful to animals and other campers.

This keeps wild camping possible for everyone who comes after you.

Which rooftop tent suits wild camping?

If you change places a lot, a fast and reliable tent is indispensable. A hardcover rooftop tent is often the best choice then. It sets up in minutes and is aerodynamic while driving. Want more space or extra storage? Consider a trailer tent. This will keep your vehicle free for day trips, while allowing your camping spot to stay put.
